A developer is someone who writes computer code. This code can take the format of computer programs, such as productivity programs or games or even web sites.
Career opportunities for developers are:
- Software Developers
- Computer Game Designers
- Web Site designers
Programmers develop computer software that help people use their computer equipment. An example of computer software is an application package which allows a user to carry out a particular task, e.g. a word processor program could be used to type up a letter. Programmers write, test and maintain computer code. In a large organisation programmers will typically work as part of a team whereas in a smaller organisation the programmer may work on their own.
Software developers will generally be in charge of many programmers and will plan, organise, co-ordinate and document a software development project. These projects will typically be quite large and the programs produced quite complex, e.g. a software system written to control the computers in a nuclear power station.
Computer game designers can work alone or as part of a team. A games programmer’s main aim is to write a computer game that is addictive and that will entertain the people who play it. There are many types of computer game, such as platform games, role playing games, action games and sports games.
Web site designers are normally part of a larger team with each team member having a different skill, for example, designing graphics of a web site or designing the layout of web pages on the site. Web developers create web pages that can work on many computer platforms, e.g. from Desktop PCs to SmartPhones.
