A computer network is the connection of two or more computers together to facilitate communication and the sharing of resources and information. Computer networks are becoming more and more popular and it may be the case that modern households have some sort of network connection, for example, a household may use wi-fi to connect their computers together and a router or other device to allow these computers to connect to the Internet.
Networks can be divided into two general types. These are:
- Wide area networks – WANs
- Local area networks – LANs
Wide Area Networks operate over large geographic areas, for example, between countries. The most famous example of a WAN is the Internet.
Local Area Networks are quite limited in area, generally allowing for computing devices to communicate and share resources in a strictly defined geographic area, such as a college building or campus in the same city.
