Encrypting Data

Encryption is the process of converting your data to an unreadable form to guard against unauthorised access. An authorised user can convert encrypted data back into a readable form, a process known as decryption. Encryption protects sensitive data from being accessed by unauthorised users who come into possession of lost or stolen computers.

Encryption is generally transparent to the user who encrypts the file. The user does not need to manually decrypt the encrypted file before they can use it – they can open and change the file in the normal manner.
