Using Strong Passwords

A strong password must be complex, so that it cannot be easily guessed. Ideally, a strong password should make use of upper and lower case letters, digits and special characters (&, @, # etc.)and should not be based on a dictionary word or a proper name. Passwords should be at least eight characters long and should be changed regularly.

A strong password is your first line of defence against security and privacy threats. You need strong passwords in the following areas:

  • Local access to standalone computers
  • Network access
  • Access to Websites holding sensitive data, such as personal or financial details
  • Access to valuable or confidential data
